Interdisciplinary Dental Care

Most patients see one dentist at a time. You get a referral, schedule a new appointment, wait weeks, and hope the different providers are on the same page by the time treatment begins. For anything beyond routine care, that fragmented approach often leads to longer timelines, miscommunication, and outcomes that fall short of what is actually possible. There is a better way, and it starts with having the right specialists in the same room from day one.

At Laudenbach Periodontics & Dental Implants, we offer something rare in the Philadelphia area: a true interdisciplinary care model built around two board-certified specialists working together under one roof. With 45 years of combined specialty experience in the greater Philadelphia region, our practice brings together a periodontist and a prosthodontist whose work is fully integrated, not just referred back and forth. The result is coordinated, comprehensive dental care designed around your complete oral health, from the foundation of your gums and bone to the final look and function of your smile.

What Interdisciplinary Dental Care Actually Means

Interdisciplinary care is more than two providers in the same building. It means those providers actively collaborate on your treatment plan before a single procedure begins. At our practice, this looks like a periodontist and prosthodontist reviewing your case together, discussing the condition of your gum tissue and bone alongside the restorative goals, and building a unified approach that accounts for both.

The Periodontal Side of the Equation

Periodontal health forms the foundation of everything we do. Dr. Jay Laudenbach, a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, leads our periodontal team with over 30 years of experience treating gum disease, bone loss, soft tissue concerns, and the supporting structures of the teeth. Dr. Ishita Bhavsar, board-eligible for the American Board of Periodontology, brings additional periodontal training and is also certified in Fotona laser therapy. Together, they address the biological health of your mouth, ensuring the tissue and bone are in the best possible condition before any restorative work begins.

The Restorative Side of the Equation

Once the foundation is established, the restorative outcome takes center stage. Dr. Robert Slauch, DDS, MDSc, FACP, is a board-certified prosthodontist and Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP). His background includes training in the highly regarded Periodontal Prosthesis program at Penn, one of the few programs of its kind in the United States, which provided him with dual training in periodontal and restorative principles. Dr. Slauch handles the restorative and aesthetic outcomes of treatment, including dental implants, full-arch restorations, and full-mouth rehabilitation.

Why This Approach Produces Better Results

When a periodontist and a prosthodontist plan treatment together, the results are more predictable from the start. A crown placed over unhealthy tissue or bone will not last. An implant placed without restorative planning may not look or function the way it should. Research published in Bioinformation found that patients receiving interdisciplinary dental care had significantly higher treatment success rates and lower complication rates compared to those treated by single-specialty providers. That outcome gap is not a coincidence. It reflects the value of coordinated planning.

At our practice, Dr. Laudenbach and Dr. Slauch review cases together before your treatment plan is finalized. This means the health of your gum tissue and bone is considered alongside your restorative goals, and each stage of care is timed and sequenced to support the next. Patients pursuing dental implants, full-arch replacement, smile makeovers, or full-mouth rehabilitation benefit directly from this level of coordination because nothing happens in isolation.

Conditions and Treatments That Benefit from Coordinated Care

Many patients who come to us are dealing with more than one issue at once. Gum disease, bone loss, missing teeth, worn or damaged teeth, and concerns about appearance often overlap in ways a single provider is not positioned to address in full.

Our interdisciplinary approach is particularly well-suited for patients pursuing the following:

  • Full arch implant restorations and All-on-X treatment, where both surgical placement and prosthetic design must align precisely
  • Full mouth rehabilitation involving multiple teeth, tissue restoration, and restorative reconstruction
  • Dental implants in patients with a history of gum disease or bone deficiency, where the periodontal environment must be stabilized before implants are placed
  • Cosmetic and restorative goals where gum tissue contouring, crown lengthening, or grafting is part of the aesthetic plan

Having both disciplines involved from the start means your treatment is built on a complete picture of your oral health, not just one piece of it.

A Level of Care That Is Not Common

Most dental practices refer out for specialty care. Some general dentists work alongside one specialist. Very few practices offer the level of in-house specialty coordination we provide. Having a board-certified periodontist and a board-certified prosthodontist available to co-manage your care, under one roof, with shared records and direct communication, is a meaningful advantage for patients whose treatment involves both disciplines.

This is also the environment where cases do not fall through the cracks. When your periodontist and your prosthodontist are working from the same treatment plan, there is no gap between who said what, or whose timeline takes priority. Your oral health and your smile outcome are treated as one goal.
