Crown Lengthening in Cherry Hill, NJ

Crown lengthening is a periodontal procedure that reshapes the gum line and bone to reveal more of your tooth’s natural structure. This treatment serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, creating the proper foundation for dental restorations or improving smile proportions by adjusting the relationship between your teeth and gums.

Laudenbach Periodontics & Dental Implants has been serving the Cherry Hill community and surrounding New Jersey areas for nearly five decades. Dr. Jay Laudenbach and Dr. Ishita Bhavsar bring advanced training in periodontal therapy and surgical techniques to deliver personalized care that addresses your specific needs and goals.  Both Dr. Laudenbach and Dr. Bhavsar have advanced training in minimally invasive crown lengthening treatment using the Fotona Lightwalker laser system.

Crown Lengthening Candidacy

Your dentist may tell you that crown lengthening should be performed before you have a crown or veneer placed on your tooth.  Crown lengthening addresses distinct dental challenges that require precise tissue modification to restore proper tooth structure and appearance.

Who Needs Functional Crown Lengthening

When decay extends below your gum line, your dentist cannot access the damaged area without first exposing healthy tooth structure. Teeth that break beneath the gingival margin present similar challenges for restoration placement. Crown lengthening creates the access needed for proper treatment while maintaining the health of surrounding periodontal tissues.

Some patients have teeth that appear adequate in length but lack sufficient structure above the bone to support a crown. This situation requires crown lengthening to establish the proper relationship between bone, gums, and the planned restoration. Research confirms crown lengthening is one of the most frequently performed periodontal procedures and results in stable periodontal tissues during recovery.

Who Benefits From Aesthetic Crown Lengthening

If your smile reveals excessive gum tissue when you speak or smile, crown lengthening can create better proportions. Uneven gum lines that make some teeth appear shorter than others also benefit from this procedure. The goal is establishing symmetry and balance that enhances your natural smile without looking artificial or overdone.

How Crown Lengthening Works

The procedure begins with thorough evaluation and planning. We examine your teeth, measure your existing gum and bone levels, and use advanced imaging to map out the precise modifications needed. This planning phase ensures we achieve your specific goals while maintaining periodontal health.

The Surgical Approach

During the procedure, we carefully reduce excess gum tissue and contour the underlying bone to expose the planned amount of tooth structure. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout the process. Dr. Laudenbach and Dr. Bhavsar both have advanced training in Fotona Lightwalker laser therapy, a procedure that reduces damage to your gum and bone tissues, and supports faster initial healing compared to traditional techniques.

Crown lengthening typically takes one to two hours depending on how many teeth require treatment. You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to protect the surgical sites and promote optimal healing during recovery.

What Happens After Surgery

Most patients return to their normal routines within a few days following crown lengthening. Most patients experience virtually no discomfort or swelling following the procedure and take a low level of ibuprofen and Arnica Montana, a homepathic to help prevent and resolve any symptoms quickly. We recommend soft foods for the first week and provide specific guidelines for maintaining oral hygiene around the treated areas.

Most of the healing process occurs in two to three months as your gum tissue settles into its new position. In some cases, we recommend that you wait until four or six months following the procedure to allow for complete stabilization of your gum line.  Your dentist will wait until this healing is complete before proceeding with any planned restorative work to ensure the best possible outcome.

Recovery Milestones and Timeline

The healing process follows a predictable pattern with distinct phases. Knowing what to expect helps you prepare for recovery and recognize normal healing progress:

  • Initial discomfort and swelling peak within the first 48 hours
  • Most patients resume work and regular activities by day three or four
  • Soft diet maintains comfort and protects surgical sites for seven days
  • Suture removal typically occurs at the two-week mark
  • Gum tissue continues remodeling for eight to twelve weeks
  • Final tissue position stabilizes around the three-month point

You’ll notice gradual improvements in both comfort and appearance as healing progresses. We schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and address any concerns that arise during the healing period.

Combining Crown Lengthening With Related Treatments

Crown lengthening often integrates with broader treatment plans to achieve comprehensive results. Once your gums have healed, your restorative dentist can proceed with placing crowns, veneers, or other planned work. The procedure establishes the stable foundation these restorations need for long-term success.

Some patients need additional periodontal procedures alongside crown lengthening. Gum grafting addresses recession in other areas, while bone grafting restores lost bone structure when necessary. We coordinate all aspects of your periodontal care, including dental implant placement when tooth replacement becomes part of your treatment plan.

Patients seeking smile enhancement may combine crown lengthening with cosmetic periodontal surgery to address multiple aesthetic concerns simultaneously. This integrated approach often produces more dramatic and satisfying results than addressing issues individually.
