Arestin® in Philadelphia

Periodontal disease is a serious infection under your gumline that requires targeted antibiotic therapy. ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) kills the bacteria causing the infection. This innovative approach works beneath your gum line, targeting bacteria that traditional cleaning methods cannot reach.

Dr. Jay Laudenbach and Dr. Ishita Bhavsar at Laudenbach Periodontics & Dental Implants use Arestin as part of comprehensive periodontal therapy to restore your gum health. Our Philadelphia practice combines this advanced antibiotic with other therapies to maximize healing and long-term success.

How Arestin Works

Arestin starts working quickly, right at the source of infection, and keeps fighting bacteria long after you leave the dental office. The medication uses tiny antibiotic-filled microspheres placed directly into infected areas. These microspheres dissolve slowly over time, continuously releasing minocycline hydrochloride to fight bacterial infections.

The powder microspheres provide sustained antibiotic action for up to 14 days at the infection site. Arestin fights inflammation for 30 days, providing significantly better results than scaling and root planing alone for up to 90 days. This extended action helps reduce pocket depth and promotes healthier gum tissue attachment to your teeth.

The antibiotic dose delivered directly creates high concentrations where you need it most. This localized approach means the minocycline targets harmful bacteria without affecting your entire body the way oral antibiotics do.

Benefits of Combining Arestin with Scaling

Arestin integrates seamlessly with scaling and root planing procedures, creating a comprehensive approach that addresses both symptoms and underlying causes of gum disease. The combination therapy addresses periodontitis more effectively than mechanical cleaning alone.

Clinical data show this antibiotic reduces pocket depths and improves attachment levels better than root planing by itself. The sustained release of minocycline continues working between dental visits, giving your gums time to heal and reattach to teeth. This ongoing bacteria-fighting action reduces inflammation and swelling in treated areas.

People notice improvement in gum health within weeks. The reduction in harmful bacteria allows healthy tissue to regenerate. Your gums become firmer, pinker, and bleed less during brushing and flossing as healing progresses.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment typically takes just a few minutes to complete following your scaling and root planing procedure. Our experienced team at our Philadelphia office carefully places the antibiotic microspheres into each area using a specialized applicator.

You may feel slight pressure during placement, but the process causes minimal discomfort. The tiny powder microspheres are barely visible and you won’t feel them once they’re in place. The procedure requires no anesthesia beyond what’s used for scaling.

Each site receives the appropriate dose based on pocket depth and severity. The entire application process adds only a few minutes to your appointment.

After-Care Instructions

Following application, avoid disturbing the treated areas for the first week. This means postponing flossing and using toothpicks around the treated sites while the microspheres work to eliminate harmful bacteria. Don’t touch or probe with your tongue or fingers.

You can continue to brush your teeth gently, but avoid aggressive brushing near the treated areas. Use a soft-bristled brush and be gentle around treated teeth and gums. Your gums may feel slightly tender or sensitive for a day or two.

Avoid sticky foods and hard or crunchy foods for the first week. Sticky foods can pull the powder microspheres out before they complete their work. Crunchy foods may irritate gums. Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing for the first few days.

Wait at least 10 days before you floss in treated areas. Your dentist will review specific care instructions and let you know when to resume normal oral hygiene. Most can return to complete oral care routines within 7-10 days.

Schedule a follow-up visit as recommended to monitor healing progress. These appointments allow us to evaluate how well your gums are responding and determine if additional therapy is needed.

Is Arestin Right for You?

This antibiotic works best for those with moderate to severe periodontitis who need additional support beyond mechanical cleaning alone. If you have persistent periodontal issues despite good oral hygiene, this medication may help reduce infection and promote healing.

The medication is FDA-approved and has been used successfully for over two decades. Clinical data demonstrates its safety and effectiveness in addressing gum disease. However, those allergic to minocycline or tetracycline antibiotics should not receive this therapy.

Your periodontist evaluates your specific condition during your comprehensive examination to determine if this approach is appropriate. Factors like pocket depth, bone loss severity, and overall health status help guide decisions. According to the FDA, Arestin is indicated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing procedures for reduction of pocket depth in those with adult periodontitis.

Combining with Other Therapies

Our comprehensive periodontal care approach often combines Arestin with other advanced options to maximize your healing potential. Laser therapy may be used alongside this antibiotic to further reduce bacteria and stimulate tissue regeneration in your mouth.

Some benefit from multiple applications over several months as part of ongoing periodontal maintenance. This systematic approach gives persistently infected sites the extended antibiotic action needed for complete healing. The low dose of minocycline delivered directly means you can receive therapy multiple times safely.

For those with severe bone loss, this medication may be used before or after surgical procedures like osseous surgery or guided tissue regeneration. The antibiotic helps control bacteria and creates optimal conditions for healing in your gums and mouth.
