Arestin® in Philadelphia

Periodontal disease is a serious infection under your gumline. ARESTIN® (minocycline hydrochloride) is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria that cause the infection.

  • It’s placed directly in the infected areas – or “pockets” – in your gums.
  • It’s applied right after scaling and root planing, the dental procedure that disrupts stubborn plaque and bacteria below your gum line – where brushing and flossing can’t reach.

ARESTIN® starts working quickly, right at the source of infection, and keeps fighting bacteria long after you leave the dental office. 1,2 ARESTIN® fights infection and inflammation for 30 days,2 and provides significantly better results than scaling and root planing alone for up to 90 days.3

How Arestin Enhances Your Periodontal Treatment Success

Preventative periodontal care involves multiple treatment approaches to help restore your gum health effectively. Arestin represents one of the most advanced antibiotic therapies available to combat harmful bacteria in periodontal pockets. This innovative treatment works beneath your gum line, targeting bacteria that traditional cleaning methods cannot reach.

When you receive Arestin therapy at our practice, tiny antibiotic-filled microspheres are placed directly into the infected periodontal pockets. These microspheres dissolve slowly over time, continuously releasing minocycline hydrochloride to fight bacterial infections for up to 14 days. This sustained antibiotic action helps reduce pocket depth and promotes healthier gum tissue attachment to your teeth. The treatment integrates seamlessly with scaling and root planing procedures, creating a comprehensive approach to periodontal healing that addresses both the symptoms and underlying causes of gum disease.

What to Expect During and After Arestin Treatment

Your Arestin treatment appointment typically takes just a few minutes to complete following your scaling and root planing procedure. Our experienced team carefully places the antibiotic microspheres into each treated periodontal pocket using a specialized applicator. You may feel slight pressure during placement, but the process causes minimal discomfort. Most patients find the treatment more comfortable than they initially expected.

Following your Arestin treatment, you should avoid disturbing the treated areas for the first week. This means postponing flossing and using toothpicks around the treated sites while the microspheres work to eliminate harmful bacteria. You can continue brushing your teeth gently, but avoid aggressive brushing near the treated areas. Your gums may feel slightly tender for a day or two, which indicates the treatment is working to reduce inflammation and bacterial activity. Our comprehensive periodontal therapy approach often combines Arestin with other advanced treatments to maximize your healing potential and long-term oral health success.
