Preventive Periodontal Care in Philadelphia

Preventive periodontal treatments play a crucial role in maintaining oral health and preventing the return or advancement of gum disease. Laudenbach Periodontics & Dental Implants provides the full spectrum of preventive periodontal care. We pride ourselves on providing conservative preventive care recommendations that limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary.

One of our registered dental hygienists usually performs this routine dental procedure. During this treatment, plaque and tartar buildup are removed from the teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach with regular brushing and flossing. Prophylaxis helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath by keeping the teeth and gums clean and healthy.

Periodontal maintenance is a specialized dental cleaning procedure designed for individuals with advanced gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Periodontal maintenance removes plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line, where bacteria can cause inflammation and infection. This treatment is essential for managing gum disease and preventing its progression.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are non-surgical treatments for gum disease. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and below the gum line. At the same time, root planing smooths the root surfaces to promote gum reattachment and prevent bacterial growth. This deep cleaning procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and may require multiple visits.

Arestin is an antibiotic used after scaling and root planing to treat gum disease. Microspheres of this specialized antibiotic are placed directly into the pockets between the gums and teeth after scaling and root planing. The Arestin helps kill bacteria and reduce inflammation in the gum tissue, promoting healing and reducing the risk of infection recurrence.

We routinely screen for early signs of oral cancer at each visit to our office. During any oral cancer exam, we visually inspect the oral cavity, including the lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, and throat, for abnormalities such as sores, lumps, or discolorations. Early detection of oral cancer significantly improves treatment outcomes and survival rates. Since oral cancer is rarely painful, this screening is essential for early detection and treatment.

Good oral hygiene habits are essential for preventing cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Drs. Laudenbach, Slauch, and Bhavsar take the time to educate their patients on proper oral hygiene techniques tailored to each patient’s needs.

Bite adjustment corrects irregularities in the bite alignment of the teeth. Misaligned teeth or an uneven bite can contribute to gum disease and other dental problems by causing excessive wear on certain teeth and putting strain on the jaw joints. Bite adjustment may include various therapies to reposition, reshape, or reconstruct the teeth to create a more balanced bite, improving overall oral health and function.

Preventive periodontal treatments in Philadelphia encompass a range of procedures to maintain oral health, prevent gum disease, and address various dental issues. From routine cleanings to specialized treatments, these interventions play a vital role in preserving the health and integrity of the teeth and gums.
