Crown Lengthening in Chestnut Hill, PA

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that adjusts gum tissue and bone to expose more of your tooth’s natural structure. Whether you need this treatment to support a restoration or to improve smile aesthetics, the approach requires careful planning and precise execution to achieve results that enhance both function and appearance.

Laudenbach Periodontics & Dental Implants has served the Chestnut Hill community and greater Philadelphia area for nearly 50 years. Dr. Jay Laudenbach and Dr. Ishita Bhavsar provide advanced periodontal therapy using techniques refined through decades of clinical experience and a commitment to delivering personalized care for every patient.  Both Dr. Laudenbach and Dr. Bhavsar have advanced training in minimally invasive crown lengthening treatment using the Fotona Lightwalker laser system.

Why You Might Need Crown Lengthening

Your dentist may tell you that crown lengthening should be performed before you have a crown or veneer placed on your tooth.  Crown lengthening solves problems that affect tooth structure, restoration placement, and smile appearance.

Restorative Needs

When tooth structure sits too far below the gum line, your dentist cannot properly prepare the tooth for a crown or filling. Decay that extends beneath the gums requires crown lengthening to access the damaged area and remove diseased tissue. Teeth that fracture below the gingival margin need exposed healthy structure before restoration can proceed.

Crown lengthening creates the proper relationship between your teeth, gums, and bone that allows for successful restorative work. Studies show this procedure is among the most commonly performed periodontal surgeries and produces stable tissue outcomes during the healing period.

Aesthetic Goals

Some patients seek crown lengthening to address cosmetic concerns. If your smile shows excessive gum tissue, making your teeth appear short or creating an uneven gum line, this procedure can reveal more tooth structure and establish better proportion. The result is a more balanced smile that looks natural and complements your facial features.

The Crown Lengthening Procedure

Successful crown lengthening begins with comprehensive planning. We evaluate your tooth position, measure gum tissue thickness, assess bone structure, and determine the exact amount of adjustment needed. This detailed planning ensures we meet your specific goals while preserving periodontal health.

During Your Procedure

The surgery involves carefully removing excess gum tissue and reshaping the underlying bone when necessary. We perform the procedure under local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. When appropriate, we incorporate laser therapy to minimize bleeding and accelerate the initial healing phase compared to traditional surgical methods.  Dr. Laudenbach and Dr. Bhavsar both have advanced training in Fotona Lightwalker laser therapy, a procedure that reduces damage to your gum and bone tissues, and supports faster initial healing compared to traditional techniques.

Most crown lengthening procedures take one to two hours depending on the complexity of your case and the number of teeth involved. You’ll leave with clear instructions for protecting the surgical sites and supporting optimal recovery.

After the Procedure

The first few days require some adjustments to your routine. You’ll experience mild swelling and sensitivity, but these symptoms typically resolve within 48 to 72 hours. We recommend soft foods for the first week to protect the treated areas while they begin healing.

Your gums need two to three months to heal completely and settle into their new position. During this time, the tissue stabilizes and any planned restorative work can proceed once healing is complete.  In some cases we will recommend waiting a period of four to six months to allow the gums to fully stabilize before moving forward with crown or veneer treatment with your dentist.

What to Expect During Your Recovery

Recovery from crown lengthening follows a predictable timeline with specific milestones. Most patients find the process manageable with proper care and realistic expectations:

  • Swelling and discomfort peak within the first two days
  • Normal activities resume within three to five days
  • Soft diet protects surgical sites for approximately one week
  • Sutures are removed at your follow-up appointment
  • Tissue remodeling continues for two to three months
  • Final gum position stabilizes around the three-month mark

We schedule follow-up visits to monitor your healing progress and ensure your gums are responding as expected. You’ll notice steady improvement in comfort and appearance as recovery advances.

Integrating Crown Lengthening With Other Procedures

Crown lengthening frequently serves as the foundation for comprehensive treatment plans. Once your gums heal, your dentist can proceed with placing the planned crowns, veneers, or other restorations. The procedure creates the stable base these treatments require for lasting success.

Many patients need additional periodontal procedures to address related concerns. Gum grafting treats recession in other areas, while bone grafting rebuilds lost bone structure when necessary. We develop integrated treatment plans that consider all aspects of your periodontal health, including dental implant placement when tooth replacement becomes part of your care.

Patients focused on smile enhancement often combine crown lengthening with cosmetic periodontal surgery to achieve comprehensive aesthetic improvements. This coordinated approach often delivers more dramatic results than addressing concerns separately.
